How the business began

How the business began

Blog post – Michael Richardson, Owner & Academy Director of M.R.F.A.

I'm sure that anyone who knows me knows I'm a perfectionist – I'm always looking at how I can develop myself as a coach, the business, our players and our staff.

I’m always looking ahead at what we can introduce to our programmes to improve them and enhance the quality for our players, however, instead of constantly looking forward, I'm going to try this new thing called reflection!  I'm going to take you on the journey that M.R.F.A. has had since the business began.

The idea of M.R.F.A. began in 2013 on a family holiday in St Ives with my now wife.  The holiday was shortly after my professional playing career was cut short due to an injury and I needed to look at what was next for me and my career.. I thought about where I grew up and what led me on the path to my career in football.  I thought about the community I grew up in and the sports environment that I was surrounded by during my early years.  Then I thought, I want to give something back.  I wanted to pass on all the knowledge and experiences I had gained through professional football to the younger generation of today.  And so we had M.R.F.A.

I designed our logo while we were still in St Ives.  Within weeks, perhaps even days, we had a website.  Using everything I'd learnt, curriculums were formed, sessions were planned and then we were off.

We were 'officially' open for business in April 2014, using the vision of 'using sports to change lives'.  We ran our first ever Soccer Camp during April 2014 half-term where we saw over 50 children join every day.  This response was honestly overwhelming.  I'd never expected it would receive this much attraction.  Myself and the rest of the M.R.F.A. crew were buzzing – and so were the players.  We were thrilled.

From then on, we worked hard to up our game and in September 2014, we started working in some of the local primary schools around Great Dunmow (Dunmow St Mary’s, Great Easton Primary and Flitch Green Academy), delivering a range of P.E. lessons and afterschool clubs We also opened our first Development Group on Monday's at Great Dunmow Leisure Centre, which started with just 12 players attending. To date, we now have over 100 children every single week for this session alone.

Let's take us to the present day – February 2019.  The growth of our business is clear to see and a testament to our staff’s hard work and the quality of work delivered. Since M.R.F.A.'s beginning, we have seen eight players sign for professional football clubs, and a further seven players who are now playing at semi-professional level.   Across all of our programmes, we see over 1400 children every single week.

We look forward to the continued growth of M.R.F.A.'s business and working with our players.   I'm hopeful that our goalkeeping academy will develop further, we will see more 2-4 year olds at our pre-academy sessions and, excitingly, our new Scholarship Programme at Helena Romanes School & Sixth Form will kick off in September 2019.

Thanks to everyone who's been on this journey with M.R.F.A. since day one and your continued support!

Blog post – Michael Richardson, Owner & Academy Director of M.R.F.A.

I am fortunate enough to have spent a number of years (20 to be exact!) working in the professional game, both as a player and now as a coach. As a mid-twenties coach, that is a huge chunk of my life.
